Jorge Soares

Jorge Soares is Research Program Manager at Protocol Labs.

I am a robotics engineer with a background in computer science, electrical engineering, and communications. I received my PhD from the EPFL/IST-UL Joint Doctoral Initiative, with a focus on the control of autonomous vehicles (terrestrial and marine) and distributed sensing.

My technical interests cover a wide range of topics, including software engineering, embedded systems, communication protocols, sensor networks, robotics, and marine technology, and extending as far as industrial automation and computer security. I have worked in many of these fields and published in several international conferences and journals.

In 10 years of volunteering with IEEE, I have assumed leadership roles in areas including recruitment, event organisation, and strategic planning. Along the way, I have worked in multicultural teams, organised large events, and worked through the many challenges involved in the management of a 400-thousand-member global non-profit association.

I have been too fond of encyclopaedias from an early age, and revel in learning about all subjects. I am also a keen traveller, having so far visited 45+ countries in four continents.
